Lineage and Family History societies are organizations whose members are able to prove a blood lineage to a particular person, such as Charlemagne, or an ancestor who meets other requirements. For example, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) must descend from a person who contributed to the Colonial cause during the American Revolution. Members of the First Families of Ohio must descend from a person who settled in Ohio prior to 1820. A listing of many, but not all, lineage groups can be found here.

Why join a lineage society? Some people join for good, old-fashioned bragging rights. Who wouldn’t want to show people that you were descended from an immigrant who reached Plymouth in 1620 by joining the General Society Mayflower Descendants? Another reason to join a society is that it validates your genealogical research. Not only did you trace your family to early Jamestown, but the society has accepted and agrees with your research. A third reason to join is that a society acts as a repository for your research results. This is a great solution for people who have no relatives interested in their genealogical pursuits.

Our experience lineage and family history society researchers at Genealogists.com can identify societies that you might be eligible to join, complete the required research or organize your existing research, and fill out the required paperwork for you.
