  • St. Petersburg Archives
    Contains records from the 1700s to 1918, including Duma Lists and records of foreign companies that did business in Russia
  • Russia State Historic Archives
    Contains Protestant church registers in some 300 large volumes called “Metrical” books and other records such as adoption
  • Central State Moscow Historical Archives
    Has records from the 1750s to 1917, including Obeliai Jewish vital records.
  • Kaunas Regional Archives
    Contains pre-1915 records for the seven Uyezds (Districts) of the former Russian Empire. Includes Revision Lists, Family Lists, various types of Tax Records, Guild Records, Court Records, Internal Passport Records (1919-1940)
  • Russian State Military Archives
    Contains files of foreign origin, including papers relating to Jewish organizations. Most of these files were taken from libraries and archives from all over Europe by the Soviet Trophy Brigades in the aftermath of the Second World War
  • Russian State Naval Archives (RGA VMF)
    One of the oldest archives in Russia. Contains records on the administration of the Russian and Soviet navies and flotillas, units, ships, military ports, naval bases, scientific research establishments, naval education institutions, boat construction enterprises, hydrographic and scientific expeditions and the participation of the navy in the wars of Russia and in its revolutionary activities


  • Russian Baltic Information Center – Blitz
    Records on Russian and Soviet navy (1696-1940)
  • FSB Offices Contain records from the Lenin and Stalin era of arrests, trials, executions, and rehabilitation proceedings of the former KGB offices located in the same city (or region) in which the person was arrested.

Some of the major records sources that can be used for genealogy research in Russia include:

  • Birth, marriage, and death records were kept by some towns as early as 1500s
  • Birth, marriage, and death records have been recorded by the government from 1919 to the present
  • Russian Empire Census of 1897 is the only complete population census conducted in Imperial Russia
  • Russian Census of 2002 is the only population census conducted in the post-Soviet Russia
  • Probate records were kept by the towns and counties of individuals who owned property, along with their relatives

  • Civilian service records of government work
