Some of the major records sources that can be used for genealogy research in China include:

  • Jiapu
    Family genealogical record where only the particular family’s pedigree is shown to the exclusion of others who are not directly related
  • Zupu
    Clan genealogy record showing the different families residing in the village, including the branches of the families who came from the same village
  • Cemeteries
  • National census records recorded in 1953, 1964, 1982, and 1990
  • Immigration records beginning in the 1700s
  • Newspapers published notices of marriages, divorce, death, funerals, obituaries, and wartime casualties
  • Land and real estate trading contracts
