On March 18th 1990 the museum was robbed by 2 unknown men dressed in Boston police uniforms. They gained entry, tied up the security guards with duct tape & handcuffs and made off with 12 pictures, drawings, an etching & a Chinese beaker. The Concert by Vermeer and Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt were two priceless works stolen.

In December 2002, two thieves used a ladder to climb to the roof and break in to the Vincent Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In just a few minutes the thieves stole two paintings: Van Gogh’s View of the Sea at Scheveningen and Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen, valued at $30 million. Dutch police convicted two men in December 2003, but did not recover the paintings.

The gang struck at the Ashmolean Museum - part of Oxford University - as New Year revellers celebrating the Millenium were thronging the streets. The thieves were believed to have broken in through the construction site for a new library which was attached to the museum, clambered across the roof and lowered themselves through a glass roof by rope ladders to snatch the paiting.
